HGP Field Trip!

Okay, I know it's been ages since I updated, but I have no excuses or apologies.

A couple of weekends ago, Mrs. HGP and I took a little trip to the Museum of Science and Industry here in Chicago. Now, we mainly came to see the Jim Henson exhibit (awesome), but before we left we took a spin by the U-505 exhibit (also awesome). On the way out, I noticed an old acquaintance...

Zombie Hitler Stamp!

But it really happened:

The answer is of course, Operation Cornflakes. Which is a lame name for a kickass project:

Operation Cornflakes was a World War II Office of Strategic Services PSYOP mission in 1944 and 1945 which involved tricking the German postal service Deutsche Reichspost into inadvertently delivering anti-Nazi propaganda to German citizens through mail.

The operation involved special planes that were instructed to airdrop bags of false, but properly addressed mail in the vicinity of bombed mail trains. When recovering the mail during clean-up of the wreck, the postal service would hopefully confuse the false mail for the real thing and deliver it to the various addresses.

The content of the mail often included copies of Das Neue Deutschland, the Allies' German language propaganda news sheet. In addition, the postage stamps used were subtly designed to resemble the standard stamp with Adolf Hitler's face, but a close examination would reveal that his face is made to look like an exposed skull or similarly unflattering imagery. Also, the country identifier 'Deutsches Reich' (German Empire) read 'Futsches Reich' (Kaput Empire).

The first mission of Operation Cornflakes took place on 5 February 1945, when a mail train to Linz was bombed. Bags containing a total of about 3800 propaganda letters were then dropped at the site of the wreck, which were subsequently picked up and delivered to Germans by the postal service.

Pretty rad. Shame about the name. I guess they can't all be Operation Midnight Climax.

I somehow managed to miss a couple of days, killing my daily streak. This is a shame because I had a really great run dating from last April of putting at least one post up daily (as well as giving lie to the picture on the right hand side of this screen).

Considering my screw-up, now is as good a time as any to institute a minor change in post frequency here on HGP. I'm running reasonably low on good, usable images anyway, so I'm moving to a M-W-F posting starting tomorrow, and continuing until the well runs completely dry.

Of course, if I get ORIGINAL Hitler-Abuse art submitted (to HitlerPuncherATGmailDOTcom) at any time, it will go up immediately. So, if you want more HGP, you might consider D-ing It Y.

Well this one almost pulled a fast one on me:

At first I thought this was a genuine Golden Age cover, until I realized that the artwork had a surprisingly Kirbyesque, Silver Age feel (and the logo was oddly modern looking). It turns out that Surprising Comics was a 1999 attempt to reprint Golden Age stories, whose cover was pencilled by long-time Kirby inker Chic Stone, and inked by Tom Hickey. I can't find a direct lift for this pose, but there are quite a few 1960s Kirby covers that look suspiciously similar.

And now you know...

Oh and the character engaged in Mighty-Thor-esque grapplage with Hitler is named 'Nemesis.'

This is another one where I can't remember the credit. Anyone wants to take it, it's yours.

To sum up: Captain Freedom, dressed in yet another one of the ugliest flag costumes imaginable, takes a swing at Hitler, who is singlehandedly leading an army of what appear to be elf-boot-wearing Lovecraftian Horrors from the Deep through an incredibly well-made and presumably secret tunnel underneath the White House.

No, I think I'm going to stick with it:

Oh, Golden Age, you complete me.
